STAFF SURVEY – THE INITIAL SITUATION
Any kind of planning to improve the development of a company requires a complete and objective assessment of the situation. Instead of relying on facts and figures that base on a backward looking perspective and are suitable for a future planning only to a limited extent, it is better to make use of a company’s best source of Information:
its employees.
We make use of this invaluable source by means of a structured staff survey.
In small companies every single employee is questioned. In larger companies employees of all relevant departments and hierarchy levels are chosen in order to get a representative cross-section.
During 90 minutes one-on-one interviews every participant is asked the same six questions – five open questions as well as the “King’s or Queen’s Question” which changes the respective employee would perform, if he or she had the say for one day. The limitation to 90 minutes makes the expenditure of time manageable for each individual employee.
All the answers remain anonymous and of course no one will ever come to know who gave which answer. This form of trustful atmosphere as well as the obvious interest in the opinion of each individual employee he or she often does not experience in his or her daily work result in a high motivation to share opinions and experience.
In a joint meeting, during which the answers of the survey are evaluated on blackboards, a precise suggested solution develops which enlarges upon the company’s situation in detail and forms the basis of the following components.
